Golf Club Values

"So, you found an old golf club in grandpa's attic and you want to know what it's worth?"

Here's the short answer: "It's worth exactly what someone else is willing to pay for it!"

But, you probably would like to know if that figure is closest to $5, $50, $500 or $5,000. Well, there are two ways that I will help you --

1. Check out this link to get a general idea of golf club values.

2. If you're still not sure of the value, or want a little more accurate answer . . .

Here's the catch. You have to provide me with incredible detail. Including, but not limited to the following:

Ben Hogan Iron IdentificationFor help identifying Ben Hogan Irons, click here.

  1. Condition of clubhead(s), shaft(s) and grip(s). This greatly affects the value. It's not as critical as it is with baseball cards, but it's still important. Most of the time, an older collectible club is worth more in its natural condition than it would be if it was refinished and made to look like new. List things like nicks, general appearance and colors, rust, loose grips, cracks in wooden heads or shafts, replaced grips or shafts, whipping, paint or stamps, labels, etc. Use a magnet to verify that shafts are made of wood. Manufacturers made brown coated shafts in the late '20s and early '30s when steel first came out because people were reluctant to play with that "new-fangled" material!

  2. All markings on the clubhead. Don't make me write back and ask you, "Which part of ALL don't you understand?" This includes face markings on old irons, nicking marks around the hosel, Patent Numbers, and any stamps in wooden clubheads. Face markings on old wooden shafted irons are one of the best ways to age the club.
  3. All markings on the shaft(s). This includes design features like steps or bulges, stamps in wooden shafts and labels or paint markings.
  4. General design description. Do your best to describe the shape of the clubhead, intentional shaft bends, funny looking grips, etc. Try and compare the shape to something else. For example, you might find an old wooden shafted niblick with a head as big as a milk saucer, or a putter with a head that looks like a garden hoe!
  5. Any history that you know of, such as "My dad got these for his 30th birthday back in 1955.".
  6. Measurements. Any length, width, swingweight, total weight, head size, loft angle, lie angle, etc. will be helpful for those really hard to identify clubs.
  7. Send pictures or images if possible!
  8. For sets, which clubs and how many total clubs? A 3 iron, 8 iron and pitching wedge does not constitute 3-PW! If you do list 3-PW, you should also let me know that there are 8 clubs total.
  9. Anything else you can possibly think of that might be helpful!

Once you've collected all of this info, use your mouse to highlight these 8 categories above and "Copy" it to your clipboard (On Windows machines you can press Ctrl-C on your keyboard, or go to the Edit menu and select Copy. Then press this email link and Paste it into the body of the email message). Then, you can answer each question and I can tell you the value. If I have to write back to you for additional information, don't hold your breath!

NOTICE: I would like to devote more time to my website and email, but it is only a hobby. Usually I keep up pretty well, but the last few weeks I've fallen far behind in my Internet golf club endeavors due to those pesky non-hobby related activities like work and family :>) Please be patient if I don't reply quickly!

Or, you can try my new form. Just fill in the blanks and I will try to help you.
